The Rector of the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT), Zaria, Dr. Danjuma Ismaila, has urged the federal government to increase funding for the institution, citing a troubling wave of staff departures driven by inadequate salaries.
Dr. Ismaila made the appeal during an oversight visit by the Chairman of the House Committee on Aviation Technology, Hon. Tajudeen Abisodun. According to a statement issued by the college’s Director of Information, Dr. Jude Amadi, the Rector attributed the ongoing brain drain to the college’s low wage structure, which has made it difficult to retain skilled personnel.
“Many of our trained professionals are being poached by industry players and sister agencies offering significantly better pay,” Dr. Ismaila said.
He emphasized NCAT’s crucial role in training a large share of Nigeria’s aviation workforce and acknowledged the support of the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, as well as previous administrations, for their contributions to the institution’s development.
In response, Hon. Abisodun praised NCAT for its contributions to both national and international aviation sectors. He pledged the committee’s support in tackling the college’s most pressing challenges, particularly around staff welfare and infrastructure upgrades.
The committee also committed to reviewing the college’s detailed presentation to identify key areas for intervention. Hon. Abisodun assured NCAT of sustained legislative backing and a continuous dialogue to address its needs.
Following a tour of the facilities, committee members expressed satisfaction with the existing infrastructure and reaffirmed their commitment to helping NCAT maintain its standard of excellence in aviation training.
