In a pioneering move to boost sustainable agriculture and address protein deficiency, the Anambra State Ministry of Agriculture, in collaboration with the Faculty of Agriculture, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, has launched a three-week intensive training on African Palm Weevil and Golden Apple Snail farming.
The program, themed “African Palm Weevil and Golden Apple Snail Farming: Insects Business, Changing the World”, was flagged off at the Ministry’s Conference Hall in Awka. Over 100 participants from across the state have enrolled in the training, which features international expertise, including Barr. Madala Chandra Sekhar from India—a renowned authority in palm weevil farming using dead palm cellulose and other natural materials.
Speaking at the launch, Anambra State Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Forster Ihejiofor, emphasized the transformative potential of insect farming. “This is a low-cost, high-return agricultural opportunity,” he said. “Palm weevils and golden apple snails are rich in protein and suitable for both human consumption and animal feed. We are equipping people not just to farm, but to become trainers and entrepreneurs in this emerging field.”
Dr. Ihejiofor noted that the program aims to reduce the cost of animal feed by up to 65% through the replacement of fish protein with palm weevil larvae and snails, while also helping to combat malnutrition. “In a few years, we envision a new generation of Anambra-based millionaires who built their wealth through backyard insect farming,” he added.
Prof. Cordelia Ebenebe, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, described the initiative as a critical step toward food security and nutritional improvement. “We are exploring micro-livestock that can be raised in any household, providing vital protein and essential amino acids,” she said. “This is how we fight malnutrition, reduce child stunting, and secure affordable protein for families.”
She stressed that these lesser-known sources of protein could reshape local agriculture, especially amid rising livestock costs and increasing food insecurity.
Also speaking, the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Ifeyinwa Uzoka, encouraged participants to embrace the global shift toward edible insects. “Insects are now being used not just for food, but in products ranging from snacks and baked goods to beer and medical applications. This training is a gateway to new opportunities,” she stated.
Barr. Madala Chandra Sekhar, the lead trainer, expressed his enthusiasm for supporting Nigeria’s agricultural transformation. “I am committed to sharing knowledge that will empower individuals to create nutrition-focused, income-generating ventures through insect farming,” he said.
The training marks a bold step by Anambra State toward diversifying agriculture, enhancing livelihoods, and improving nutritional outcomes through innovative and sustainable practices.
