Joint Security Operatives Foil Kidnapping Attempt in Enugu, Neutralise Suspect, Recover AK-47 Rifle

Joint operatives of the Enugu State Police Command and members of the Neighbourhood Watch Group have foiled a kidnapping attempt along the Ngene-Ukwu axis of the Adani–Nsukka Road in Enugu State, neutralising one suspected kidnapper and recovering an AK-47 rifle with live ammunition.
The incident occurred at about 6:00 a.m. on January 18, 2026, when police operatives attached to the Adani Division, acting in collaboration with local security volunteers, engaged armed kidnapping suspects in a fierce gun battle. During the exchange, one of the suspects was neutralised, while an AK-47 rifle loaded with two rounds of live ammunition was recovered. Other members of the gang reportedly escaped into the surrounding forest with gunshot injuries.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects had emerged from a nearby bush with the intention of abducting occupants of a vehicle travelling along the route. The suspects reportedly opened fire upon sighting the security operatives, who responded swiftly and decisively, overpowering the gang and thwarting the kidnapping attempt.
Security agencies have since intensified efforts to track down and arrest the fleeing suspects, as well as dismantle the entire criminal network operating in the area. Residents, particularly healthcare providers and community members, have been urged to report anyone presenting with gunshot wounds or suspicious injuries to the nearest police station or security formation.
Commending the operation, the Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, psc, praised the gallantry and professionalism displayed by the joint security team. He reassured residents of the continued commitment of the Police and other security agencies to rid the state of criminal elements and ensure the safety and security of lives and property across Enugu State.
The Police Command also called on the public to continue supporting security efforts by providing timely and credible information that can aid crime prevention and response.
