The Controller General of the Federal Fire Service, Mr. Jaji Abdulganiyu, has ordered a full-scale investigation into the fatal road accident involving a fire service truck and a Toyota Camry, which occurred last Friday at the ECWA Church Junction in Wuse 2, Abuja.
The tragic incident claimed the lives of three individuals — all children — and left one person critically injured. According to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Controller of the Federal Fire Service, Deputy Controller of Fire Momodu Ganiyu, the accident happened during an emergency response to a fire outbreak at a plaza in Banex.
The fire truck, which had reportedly run out of water, was returning at high speed to refill its tank when it collided with the Toyota Camry that was emerging from a side street.
In a statement released over the weekend, Mr. Abdulganiyu expressed profound sorrow over the loss of lives, offering his deepest condolences to the bereaved families. He emphasized the Federal Fire Service’s commitment to ensuring accountability and preventing future tragedies.
“We are heartbroken by this incident, especially by the loss of such young lives,” he stated. “An investigative panel has been set up to thoroughly examine the circumstances that led to this unfortunate event.”
The driver of the fire truck has been taken into custody by the police, and staff members involved in the operation at the FCT rescue center have been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.
Despite the tragedy, the Controller General reaffirmed the Federal Fire Service’s dedication to safeguarding lives and property, noting that urgent steps will be taken to enhance operational safety during emergency responses.
