Anambra Police Rearrest Suspect in Kidnap, Murder of State Lawmaker

The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the rearrest of Ikemefuna Ossai, a key suspect in the abduction and brutal killing of the late Mr. Justice Azuka, the lawmaker who represented Onitsha 1 Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, the suspect was apprehended on May 7, 2025, in Asaba, Delta State, following a meticulous intelligence-led operation that extended across multiple Nigerian states and even into a neighboring West African country.

Ikenga noted that Ossai had previously escaped from custody, prompting a nationwide manhunt. Upon encountering police operatives in Asaba, the suspect attempted to flee but was swiftly subdued and sustained a gunshot injury to the leg during the arrest.

The Police Command, according to the PPRO, has since briefed key stakeholders, including the family of the late lawmaker and the leadership of the State House of Assembly, as part of its commitment to transparency and accountability.

Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ikioye Orutugu, expressed regret over the earlier operational lapses that led to the suspect’s escape, assuring the public that measures have been taken to prevent a recurrence. He added that actionable intelligence extracted from the suspect is already aiding ongoing operations.

Efforts have been intensified to apprehend the remaining members of the criminal syndicate behind the crime, as the Command reaffirmed its determination to bring all those involved to justice and uphold the safety and security of Anambra residents.
