The Africa Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ), a prominent civil society organization advocating for anti-corruption, human rights, and good governance, has publicly endorsed the intensified efforts of Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, to combat rising crime rates, including kidnapping, cultism, and violent offenses across the state.
In a statement issued from its Benin City headquarters, ANEEJ Executive Director, Rev. David Ugolor, commended Governor Okpebholo’s political will and swift deployment of security measures as a strong demonstration of leadership and commitment to public safety. He applauded the administration’s emphasis on intelligence-driven operations and collaborative security strategies aimed at dismantling criminal networks threatening the peace and stability of Edo communities.
However, ANEEJ stressed that all efforts to address insecurity must remain anchored in constitutional principles, human rights, and due process. “While we support the Governor’s resolve to restore law and order, it is crucial that all security and judicial processes uphold the rule of law,” Rev. Ugolor stated. “Every suspect is entitled to a fair trial and the presumption of innocence.”
He cautioned law enforcement agencies and the judiciary against resorting to extrajudicial practices or arbitrary crackdowns that could erode public trust. “Justice must not only be done—it must be seen to be done,” he emphasized.
ANEEJ further highlighted the importance of addressing the systemic roots of insecurity, such as youth unemployment, substance abuse, ineffective community policing, and gaps in education and vocational training. The organization called on the Edo State Government to pair its security operations with broader socio-economic reforms that target the underlying drivers of crime.
As part of its ongoing commitment to promoting democratic governance and institutional accountability, ANEEJ pledged continued collaboration with the government through civic education, public engagement, and policy advocacy initiatives.
Rev. Ugolor also called on traditional leaders, faith-based organizations, youth groups, the media, and other stakeholders to support collective efforts in fostering a secure, equitable, and inclusive Edo State.
Acknowledging the contributions of security agencies such as the Edo State Police Command, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), ANEEJ urged them to remain professional, impartial, and respectful of human rights in their operations.
“Edo must not slip into lawlessness. A safe society requires both decisive governance and responsible institutions,” Rev. Ugolor concluded.
ANEEJ reaffirmed its support for the state’s renewed security strategy while urging the government to remain steadfast in upholding justice, equity, and the rule of law.
