The Bayelsa State Government has directed its Special Committee on Security and Human Rights Violations to thoroughly investigate the killing of 27-year-old Daniel Ayama, who was murdered by unknown assailants on May 16 in Yenagoa.
Governor Douye Diri issued the directive on Monday during a meeting with the state Commissioner of Police, CP Francis Idu, representatives of the bereaved family, and other stakeholders at Government House, Yenagoa. The governor, represented by his deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, condemned the incident and linked it to a broader attempt by political actors to destabilize the state.
Due to his personal connection with the victim’s community, Senator Ewhrudjakpo recused himself from the case and assigned the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Dambo Biriyai (SAN), to lead a neutral investigation. The committee comprises representatives from the Nigeria Police, National Human Rights Commission, security advisers, and the Nigerian Bar Association, Yenagoa Branch.
Assuring the Ayama family of justice, the deputy governor urged the public to support the investigation by submitting evidence. He cautioned against further protests, noting that some individuals might exploit the tragedy for political gain.
“The Diri administration does not tolerate extrajudicial killings,” he said. “We urge the family and public to remain calm and allow the committee to work without interference.”
CP Idu confirmed that one suspect has been arrested and is providing credible leads. The police continue to pursue all angles to apprehend those responsible.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Mr. Ebikabowei Ayama thanked the state government for its swift response and called for a fair and unbiased investigation.
The committee has been given three weeks to submit its findings.
