As Nigeria marks Democracy Day 2025, the Executive Chairman of Epe Local Government, Princess Surah Olayemi Animashaun, has called on citizens to recommit to the principles of participation, accountability, and national unity, describing democracy as the collective voice and power of the people.
In a statement titled “Our Voice, Our Power, Our Nigeria,” Princess Animashaun urged Nigerians to reflect on the sacrifices of the past and draw strength from the resilience of those who fought to actualize and sustain democratic governance in the country.
“Today, we honour the brave men and women whose courage and sacrifice laid the foundation for the democracy we now enjoy,” she said. “Their legacy lives on in every Nigerian who believes in justice, unity, and the dream of a better nation.”
The Chairman emphasized that democracy extends beyond the ballot box, noting that meaningful participation, civic engagement, and the protection of citizens’ rights are crucial to building a just and inclusive society.
“Democracy is not just about elections—it’s about the belief that every voice matters,” she added. “We have made progress, but our journey continues. With renewed hope and determination, we march forward together.”
Addressing the people of Epe and Nigerians at large, Princess Animashaun praised their resilience and enterprise, encouraging them to remain united in the face of challenges and to embrace the nation’s diversity as a source of strength.
“Let this day reawaken our faith in our democratic ideals. Let it ignite a deeper sense of purpose and national pride,” she said. “Our future depends on the choices we make today. Let us defend democracy, uphold our rights, and shape the Nigeria we all deserve.”
Democracy Day, observed annually on June 12, commemorates the historic 1993 presidential election widely regarded as Nigeria’s freest and fairest, and honours the enduring struggle for democratic governance and civil liberties.
