The Enugu State Police Command has arrested seven male suspects and recovered multiple firearms, ammunition, and weapon-repair tools in a series of targeted operations across the state, as part of its intensified crackdown on crime in June 2025. The arrests, carried out by various tactical units of the Command, were guided by credible intelligence and confessional statements from earlier apprehended individuals.
On June 21, operatives from the Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad arrested 25-year-old Yusuf John at 9th Mile. A cut-to-size double-barrelled shotgun and an expended cartridge were recovered from him. His arrest followed confessions from three earlier suspects—Ebube Victor (22), Kenechukwu Chiegwu (23), and Tochukwu Kingsley Nwodo (26)—who identified themselves as members of the Supreme Vikings Confraternity and admitted to using the recovered firearm in several crimes.
Days earlier, on June 17, the same tactical squad arrested Ugwualor Obumneke, aged 22, following a confession by Onah Uchenna (36), who had previously been detained in connection with armed robbery and cultism. Investigations led to the recovery of a locally fabricated pistol resembling a Beretta, two double-barrel and one single-barrel pistols, a chamber of an English-made double-barrel gun, and a full set of firearm repair tools. Uchenna confessed to being a member of the Black Axe Confraternity and claimed ownership of the repair tools, stating he specialised in the maintenance of firearms.
Between June 15 and 20, a combined team from the SWAT and Octopus Tactical Squads conducted raids on identified criminal hideouts in Nkanu West and Enugu North Local Government Areas. The operation led to the arrest of 39-year-old Iloh Chukwunonso and the recovery of a locally fabricated pistol. A cut-to-size gun and two live cartridges, reportedly abandoned by fleeing suspects, were also recovered during the sweep.
All suspects are expected to be arraigned upon the conclusion of ongoing investigations. Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, psc, commended the operatives for their commitment and reaffirmed the Command’s dedication to ridding Enugu State of criminal elements. He urged residents to remain law-abiding, vigilant, and to continue providing the police with credible information to aid in the fight against crime.
