The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has resumed firefighter training at the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT), Zaria, utilizing the long-dormant Multipurpose Aircraft Fire Simulator. The initiative marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to enhance aviation safety and emergency preparedness.
The training program, which began this month, is being carried out in collaboration with the Nigerian Aviation Fire and Safety Association (NAFSA). In a statement issued by the association’s President, Comrade Sunday Ugbeikwu, the development was made possible through the strategic leadership of FAAN Managing Director, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku.
Ugbeikwu highlighted that the simulator—originally acquired under former Minister of Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika—had remained unused for years, forcing previous firefighter training to be conducted abroad, most recently in Douala, Cameroon.
“Mrs. Kuku’s proactive leadership ensured the reactivation of the simulator. Following high-level engagement with NCAT management in May 2024, an agreement was reached to commence in-country training for FAAN’s firefighting personnel,” the NAFSA President stated.
He described the move as a landmark achievement under Mrs. Kuku’s tenure, commending her for prioritizing capacity building and operational efficiency within the agency. According to him, the decision reflects her commitment to safety, professionalism, and staff development in the aviation sector.
The resumed training is expected to equip FAAN’s emergency response teams with enhanced technical skills, aligning with international best practices and improving overall airport safety nationwide.
Industry stakeholders have welcomed the development as a timely boost to Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure, particularly in emergency preparedness and safety management.
