The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has urged residents, families, health workers, and community leaders to take proactive steps in protecting elderly citizens from abuse in all its forms — physical, emotional, financial, and psychological.
The Mandate Secretary of the FCT Health Services and Environment Secretariat (HSES), Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, made the call in a statement marking the 2025 World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), commemorated globally every June 15. This year’s theme, “Beyond Age,” underscores the need to look past stereotypes and address the unique vulnerabilities faced by older adults.
Dr. Fasawe emphasized the importance of vigilance in identifying signs of elder abuse, such as unexplained injuries, signs of fear or withdrawal, and sudden financial changes. She urged residents to report suspected cases promptly to the appropriate authorities to ensure the safety, dignity, and well-being of older persons.
She also highlighted ongoing efforts by the FCTA, under the leadership of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, to improve the welfare of the elderly. Key among these is the Renewed Hope Initiative Medical Mission – Support for the Elderly, a programme introduced by the Office of the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu. The initiative provides senior citizens with free medical screening, treatment, and medications across the territory.
Looking ahead, Dr. Fasawe revealed plans to strengthen geriatric healthcare services, including training frontline health workers to recognize and respond to elder abuse. She added that the FCTA would continue to engage traditional, religious, and community stakeholders to raise public awareness and combat age-related stigma.
She called on federal ministries, non-governmental organizations, civil society groups, and international development partners to collaborate with the FCTA in developing policies that safeguard the elderly from exploitation, promote mental health, foster inclusion, and establish effective support and reporting systems.
“Protecting our elderly is not just a responsibility — it is a moral imperative,” she stated.
