Relief may soon come to residents of Ibeju-Lekki’s coastal communities as the Federal Government prepares to commence the construction of a 2×7.5 MVA injection substation along with a 50-kilometre 33kV dedicated power line, aimed at addressing the area’s prolonged power outages.
Officials from the Federal Ministry of Power, the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC), and the project’s contractors met on Tuesday with the Executive Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, Hon. (Mayor) Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, at the council secretariat to discuss implementation steps.
The substation is set to be located at Eleko Junction on land already donated by the local government. Chairman Olowa reiterated the council’s commitment to the project, assuring the Ministry and contractors of full support throughout its execution.
Confirming the development, Akadiri Ayorinde, Chief Press Secretary to the Executive Chairman, issued a statement noting,:
“The long-standing power outage in Ibeju-Lekki coastal communities will soon be a thing of the past. The local government, under the leadership of Mayor Sesan Olowa, has not only donated land for the substation but is also fully committed to ensuring the successful delivery of this critical infrastructure.”
The project is captured in the 2025 Appropriation Act, and the Ministry is currently working to secure the necessary funding for the multi-billion naira initiative.
To promote transparency and community involvement, the local government plans to convene a stakeholders’ meeting in the coming weeks to engage residents on the project scope and timelines.
