In a bold move to boost food security and empower grassroots farming communities, Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has extended agricultural support to 400 beneficiaries in Delta State through her Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), in partnership with the You Matter Charity Foundation led by the Wife of Delta State Governor, Mrs. Tobore Oborevwori.
Held in Asaba, the agricultural empowerment program targeted women farmers, cooperative groups, youths, and members of secondary school young farmers clubs. Beneficiaries received a wide range of farm inputs and financial grants designed to support smallholder agriculture and encourage home-grown food production.
Represented by Mrs. Ezinne Onyeme, Wife of the Delta State Deputy Governor, Mrs. Oborevwori underscored the importance of sustained investment in agriculture. “This initiative demonstrates a firm commitment to equipping farmers with the resources and financial backing they need to thrive. Agriculture is not only essential for food security but also a strategic driver of employment and wealth creation,” she said.
Senator Tinubu, through a message delivered by Mrs. Oborevwori, described the initiative as “Operation Feed Your Family and Give to Your Neighbours,” promoting food sufficiency starting at the household level. She emphasized the importance of the ‘Every Home a Garden’ campaign—an effort to revive home gardening as a tool to alleviate economic hardship and promote healthier diets.
“We are delighted to support 400 farmers across four key categories—women, youth, secondary school students, and cooperative groups. Each will return home with essential farming implements and quality seedlings,” Senator Tinubu stated.
“Home gardening is not limited by gender or age. It allows families to grow fresh, nutritious food, reduce expenses, and eat healthier. This age-old practice sustained our forebears and remains relevant today,” she added.
The First Lady expressed appreciation for the collaborative efforts of the Delta State Ministries of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Basic Education, and Youth Development in facilitating the program’s success.
Delta State Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Mr. Val Areyinka, lauded the RHI’s contribution to revitalizing agriculture. “Agriculture is life. Everyone must return to the land if we are to overcome hunger and achieve national food security,” he said, urging wider participation in farming.
The event culminated in the distribution of various agricultural resources including fertilizers, wheelbarrows, improved seedlings, cassava stems, pesticides, herbicides, chicks, goat kids, fingerlings, and cash grants to support expansion of small-scale farming operations.
Beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the support and pledged to put the inputs to effective use in order to contribute to the state’s agricultural growth and national food sufficiency.
This empowerment marks another milestone in the Renewed Hope Initiative’s mission to harness the power of agriculture for sustainable development and social transformation across Nigeria.
