Ibeju-Lekki Local Government has reinforced its commitment to environmental sustainability by prosecuting five residents for illegal waste dumping in the Shapati area. The offenders, identified as Akaa Isaac, Abiodun Lawal, Mwughoro Precious, Joshua Oloruntoba, and Ibrahim Atiku, were arrested for violating Section 115(4) of the Environmental Management Protection Law.
They were arraigned at the Magistrate Court in Magbon-Alade, where they all pleaded guilty to the charges. The court directed the offenders to clean up the area where the waste was dumped and imposed a fine of ₦15,000 on each of them. In addition, they were instructed to register with a licensed waste management authority within 48 hours. Any offender who fails to pay the fine will serve a one-month jail term.
This judgment underscores the zero-tolerance policy of the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, under the leadership of Hon. Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, toward indiscriminate waste disposal. The council urged residents to embrace proper and hygienic waste management practices to protect the environment and safeguard public health.
