In a troubling development that has reignited security concerns in Bayelsa State, armed men abducted Justice Ebiyerin Omukoro, a High Court judge and former chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Yenagoa branch, on Saturday evening.
The abduction occurred around 7:00 p.m. near a well-known eatery in the Ekeki area of the Bayelsa State capital. Eyewitnesses reported that the judge was accompanied by a relative when masked assailants, dressed in black, intercepted his vehicle, forcibly removed him, and drove off in a separate car. The incident caused panic in the vicinity, prompting nearby residents and business owners to flee the area.
The Bayelsa State Police Command confirmed the abduction in a statement issued by its spokesperson, SP Musa Mohammed. According to the release, tactical teams and aerial surveillance units, including drones, have been deployed to track down the kidnappers and ensure the safe rescue of the judge.
“As part of ongoing operations, we are using all available intelligence and technology to trace and apprehend the suspects. The safety and security of all residents, especially public officials, remain our top priority,” Mohammed said.
As of the time of reporting, the motive behind the abduction remains unknown. Authorities have not confirmed whether the kidnappers have contacted the judge’s family or issued any ransom demands.
Justice Omukoro, known for his distinguished service on the bench and leadership within the legal community, was reportedly returning from a private outing when the ambush occurred.
