The Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Alhaji Yusuf Abdullahi, has raised concerns over the reported plans by former Kano State Governor, Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking during a courtesy visit to APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, the Minister cautioned that such a move could trigger internal unrest within the party’s Kano State chapter.
According to Abdullahi, Kwankwaso no longer holds significant political influence in Kano and his defection may disrupt the party’s cohesion at the state level.
“Mr. President has access to security reports from the grassroots in Kano. The truth is, Kwankwaso is no longer relevant in the state and has no political base. His struggle to rejoin the APC could create unnecessary crises within the party,” he said.
Despite his reservations, Abdullahi emphasized that the ministry would respect and abide by the decision of the party’s leadership on the matter.
In response, APC National Chairman Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje expressed openness to Kwankwaso’s return, stating that the party is willing to welcome the former governor and his supporters in the interest of political unity and development.
“I won’t say we’re not ready to welcome him. When your brother seeks shelter and you have a big home, it’s only right to accommodate him. A friend in need is a friend indeed,” Ganduje said.
He further reiterated the APC’s commitment to expanding its membership and deepening democratic governance in Nigeria, noting that inclusive politics remains key to the party’s national strategy.
