Ibeju-Lekki Local Government has commenced a citizen sensitization campaign on automated street numbering and Geographic Information System (GIS) data capturing as part of efforts to improve community development, emergency response, and urban planning.
The awareness programme, held at the council secretariat on Friday, September 19, 2025, was led by the Executive Chairman, Hon. (Engr.) Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, who emphasized the importance of structured house numbering and GIS mapping in modern governance.
Hon. Olowa explained that the initiative will create a digital database of land parcels, assign accurate street names and house numbers, and produce a modern township map to guide sustainable development. According to him, the project will address recurring issues such as delayed emergency responses, poor utility distribution, and inefficiencies in service delivery.
“This initiative aims to bring Ibeju-Lekki in line with global smart city standards by ensuring our communities are digitally mapped, properly numbered, and fully integrated into a system that supports efficiency, safety, and growth,” the chairman said.
The event featured interactive sessions and live demonstrations of GIS technology, where technical expert Dr. Yemi Odumosu explained the role of GIS in digital mapping, real-time data analysis, and integration with future smart city systems.
Expected benefits highlighted include quicker access to emergency services, improved logistics and public service delivery, increased economic opportunities, and a data-driven approach to governance.
The sensitization programme attracted a diverse audience, including the Leader of the Legislative Council, Hon. Mojeed Olayinka; councillors; Chief of Staff, Mr. Issa Maruf Olayinka; Council Manager, Mr. Abiodun Oladipupo Otinwa; traditional rulers; industry leaders; artisans; and members of the Community Development Committee.
The council affirmed its commitment to carrying residents along throughout the process to ensure community buy-in and long-term success.
