Ibeju-Lekki Council Moves to Tackle Flooding After Days of Torrential Rainfall

In response to several days of heavy rainfall that caused flooding in parts of Ibeju-Lekki, the local government has announced immediate and long-term intervention plans to address the situation and mitigate further impact on affected communities.

The affected areas include Baba Adisa, Aiyeteju, Kaiyetoro, Araromi, Orimedu, Onosa, and surrounding neighborhoods, where residents have reported significant flooding following relentless downpours in recent days.

In a swift response to public complaints and environmental concerns, the Executive Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, Hon. Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, has directed the Chief Technical Adviser on Environment to carry out an on-site assessment of the worst-hit areas. According to the Council’s media office, a detailed report on the flooding situation has since been submitted to the chairman.

Reacting to the findings, Hon. Olowa said the local government would adopt a strategic, multi-phased approach—comprising short, medium, and long-term solutions—to address the root causes of the flooding. As part of this plan, a broad-based technical committee, including environmental experts and community representatives, is expected to be inaugurated within the week to review the report and recommend sustainable and actionable solutions.

While acknowledging the discomfort caused by the flooding, the council chairman appealed for patience and cooperation from residents. He assured the public that the local government, in collaboration with relevant state agencies, is working to design and implement an integrated flood management plan that will ensure long-term resilience for the affected communities.

“The situation is being treated with the utmost urgency. We are fully committed to not only providing immediate relief but also preventing a recurrence of this problem in the future,” Hon. Olowa said.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official communication channels and to report any emergencies or environmental hazards to the relevant authorities.
