In a bid to tackle the growing challenge of unemployment and drive inclusive development, the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government has launched a comprehensive unemployment survey focused on youth and women in the area. The exercise, which began on May 22 and is scheduled to run until May 29, 2025, is being carried out through the Department of Budget, Planning and Statistics.
According to a statement issued by Mr. Akadiri Ayorinde, Chief Press Secretary to the Executive Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, the survey seeks to gather accurate, up-to-date data on the employment status, skills, and aspirations of residents—particularly young people and women, who are among the most affected by economic displacement and underemployment.
“This survey is not just an academic exercise. It is a practical step toward understanding the economic realities of our people so that we can design programs that are tailored to their actual needs,” the statement read.
The registration is taking place at the Local Government Secretariat in Igando-Oloja, between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. daily throughout the week. Residents who are unable to visit the venue in person are encouraged to complete the survey online through the official registration link.
The exercise is open to all job-seeking individuals in the community, including both skilled and unskilled participants. The local government says the survey will cover a wide range of data points, including educational background, vocational training, current employment status, preferred job sectors, and access to resources like digital tools and transportation.
Officials say the data collected will be used to guide upcoming interventions, including job matching initiatives, vocational training programs, entrepreneurial support schemes, and other socio-economic development efforts. The findings will also form part of the local government’s broader planning framework for economic empowerment and youth engagement.
“This initiative reflects our administration’s commitment to evidence-based governance,” said an official from the Department of Budget, Planning and Statistics. “We cannot address unemployment effectively without first understanding its scope and the specific barriers our residents face.”
Ibeju-Lekki, a rapidly developing region within Lagos State, has witnessed significant infrastructure and investment activity in recent years. However, local authorities note that many residents—particularly in rural and semi-urban areas—continue to face economic challenges due to a lack of access to stable employment and job readiness resources.
With this survey, the local government aims to bridge the gap between opportunity and access, using real-time data to drive policy and improve the quality of life for its citizens.
