The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has declared open a strategic leadership retreat for senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force, in a move aimed at advancing ongoing reforms within the institution.
The two-day retreat, holding in Abuja, brings together Deputy Inspectors-General (DIGs) and Assistant Inspectors-General (AIGs) to deliberate on key issues bordering on police accountability, operational efficiency and institutional transformation.
The programme is being organised by the Police Reform Secretariat in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme, as part of broader efforts to strengthen policing standards in Nigeria.
Speaking at the opening session, the IGP said the retreat is central to his reform agenda, stressing that leadership within the force must be driven by accountability, vision and the ability to build public trust.
He noted that the outcome of the engagement should translate into improved discipline, enhanced operational effectiveness and greater respect for human rights across police commands nationwide.
Also speaking, Head of the Police Reform Secretariat, Olu Ogunsakin, highlighted progress under ongoing reform initiatives, including a revised national police recruit curriculum and the introduction of new Nigeria Police Regulations 2025 designed to align operations with modern, rights-based standards.
Sessions at the retreat are expected to focus on key areas such as evidence-based budgeting, community policing and digital transformation of police operations.
The police leadership also acknowledged the support of international partners, noting that sustained collaboration will be critical in repositioning the force to meet contemporary security demands.
The retreat is expected to conclude with actionable strategies to drive reforms and improve service delivery within the police system.
