In a decisive move to strengthen Nigeria’s maritime security architecture, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, on Wednesday inaugurated 31 state-of-the-art combat gunboats at the Marine Police Command in Lagos.
Describing the event as a historic milestone, the IGP emphasized that the newly commissioned vessels mark a significant upgrade in the operational capacity of the Marine Police, reinforcing the Nigeria Police Force’s (NPF) commitment to combating emerging threats across the nation’s waterways.
“These gunboats are not just ordinary vessels,” Egbetokun stated. “They are equipped with cutting-edge navigation and communication systems to support precision patrols, effective coordination, and swift response to maritime threats.”
He highlighted the incorporation of solar-powered systems in the boats, underscoring the Force’s alignment with global best practices in green policing. “This innovation not only enhances operational efficiency but also reflects our dedication to sustainable and environmentally responsible law enforcement,” he added.
The IGP noted that the deployment of the 31 gunboats is part of a broader strategic response to the dynamic and evolving security challenges within Nigeria’s coastal and inland waterways. According to him, the assets will be instrumental in curbing criminal activities, securing lives and property, and boosting public confidence in maritime safety.
Egbetokun reiterated that effective maritime security requires collaboration, stressing the need for synergy among sister agencies. “We will continue to deepen inter-agency cooperation, particularly with the Armed Forces, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), and the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA),” he said.
The police chief also acknowledged the vital role of local intelligence and community engagement. “We remain committed to partnering with coastal communities, building trust, and leveraging local knowledge to deny criminals the space to operate,” he said.
Expressing profound appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his unwavering support, Egbetokun described the commissioning of the gunboats as a direct result of the President’s strategic investments in national security and police modernization.
“Under Mr. President’s visionary leadership, the Nigeria Police Force is undergoing transformative reforms aimed at professional excellence,” he said. “These boats are a clear testament to that commitment.”
He assured Nigerians of the Force’s unwavering dedication to its constitutional responsibilities, pledging continued service with courage, integrity, and professionalism.
“Together, we shall build a more secure, stable, and prosperous Nigeria,” the IGP concluded.
