The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun has approved the elevation of the Nigeria Police Medical Section to a full-fledged Directorate of Medical Services, in a move described as a milestone in ongoing police reforms.
According to a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on Wednesday, the upgrade underscores the IGP’s commitment to the welfare of officers and men of the Force, with a focus on improving access to quality healthcare for personnel, retirees, and host communities.
The newly established Directorate of Medical Services will be rebranded and strategically structured to meet contemporary challenges in healthcare delivery. It will be headed by a Force Chief Medical Director, who will supervise other Directors and professionals within the Directorate, ensuring effective resource allocation, specialised oversight, and modernisation of medical services.
The IGP noted that the initiative goes beyond welfare, describing it as a strategic investment in national security. He stressed that safeguarding the health of officers and their families directly strengthens the Police Force’s capacity to protect lives and property.
“The creation of the Directorate of Medical Services is both a welfare initiative and a security strategy. A healthier and better-supported police workforce means a more effective police service to Nigerians,” the statement read in part.
The Force added that the development is in line with its broader reform agenda aimed at boosting morale, enhancing professionalism, and building an enduring welfare system for its personnel.
