Kano State joined the global observance of Menstrual Hygiene Day on May 28 by sensitizing over 400 school and out-of-school girls on menstrual hygiene management and distributing free sanitary products.
The event, held at Government Girls Arabic Secondary School Gwammaja, was organized by the Kano State Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Ministries of Health and Women Affairs. The initiative aimed to raise awareness about menstrual health, tackle stigma, and promote access to hygiene products, particularly by supporting women-led distribution efforts.
State Coordinator for Girls’ Education, Amina Kassim, stated that the program is part of the government’s broader commitment to empower adolescent girls with accurate information and access to resources that support healthy menstrual practices.
Also speaking at the event, Zahra’u Ibrahim of the State Primary Health Care Management Board emphasized that menstrual hygiene is essential to the well-being of girls and young women. She called for better access to sanitary products and improved hygiene facilities in schools to reduce absenteeism and stigma.
Founder of Dina Youth Foundation, Lubabatu Abdulkadir, revealed that the state government is distributing sanitary pads, soap, and detergent to girls in all 44 local government areas through her foundation’s network.
In total, 430 girls benefited from the distribution—400 in school and 30 out of school.
Menstrual Hygiene Day, marked every May 28, seeks to break the silence around menstruation, promote education, and ensure that all girls and women can manage their periods with dignity and safety.
