In a decisive step toward enhancing school safety, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has ordered the recruitment of 17,600 security guards to be deployed across public schools in Kano State. The announcement, made during an official event in Kano, reflects the administration’s commitment to creating a secure and conducive learning environment for students and educators.
According to a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the guards will be recruited immediately and strategically distributed, with 400 personnel assigned to each of the state’s 44 local government areas.
Governor Yusuf stressed the urgency of the initiative, citing rising security concerns and the need to protect educational institutions from potential threats.
“This decision is a clear demonstration of our government’s resolve to protect children, teachers, and school facilities from emerging security challenges,” he said. “Education must thrive in an environment free from fear.”
The guards will undergo formal training and be tasked with gate monitoring, identifying suspicious behavior, and liaising with local and national security agencies as needed.
The recruitment drive is part of a broader education reform effort led by the Yusuf administration, which includes the solar electrification of 200 schools, the distribution of instructional materials worth N2.8 billion, and plans to absorb qualified BESDA staff into permanent employment.
Governor Yusuf reaffirmed his administration’s focus on security, education, and youth empowerment as core priorities, and urged parents, traditional leaders, and community stakeholders to support government efforts in building a safer, smarter future for Kano’s children.
