The Katsina State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to regulating health education by announcing that only qualified and accredited health institutions will be allowed to operate in the state.
This was disclosed by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Tertiary Health Institutions, Hon. Umar Mammada, in response to growing concerns over the unchecked proliferation of private health training institutions across the state.
According to Hon. Mammada, a visitation panel inaugurated on October 25, 2024, completed a thorough assessment of 31 private health colleges operating in the state. The panel’s report revealed that only 9 institutions met the minimum operational and regulatory standards, while 22 were found to be non-compliant and therefore unfit to operate.
Following the findings, a White Paper Committee was constituted to develop a framework for implementing the panel’s recommendations. Based on the final report, only the following nine institutions were granted approval to continue academic activities and training: Bawo College of Health Sciences, Daura, Essam College of Health Sciences, Katsina, Cherish College of Health Sciences, Katsina, Cherish School of Health Science and Technology, Katsina, North West College of Health Sciences and Technology, Katsina, Kudan College of Health Sciences, College of Health and Environmental Science, Umar Faruk College of Health Science, Daura, Muslim Community College of Health Sciences, Funtua and College of Health Sciences and Environmental, Funtu.
Hon. Mammada emphasized that the remaining 22 unapproved institutions must remain closed and are prohibited from offering training or academic programs until they meet the required standards.
He reiterated the government’s resolve to safeguard public health by ensuring that only credible institutions with qualified personnel and proper facilities are allowed to train future health professionals in the state.
