The Kwara State Government has issued a flood warning to residents living in low-lying and flood-prone areas, urging them to relocate to safer locations as a precautionary measure.
In an official statement released by the Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, the state government said the advisory follows a warning from the National Flood Early Warning Systems Centre (FEWS) in Abuja. The federal alert is based on meteorological projections indicating heavy rainfall across various parts of the country in the coming days.
Among the areas identified as high-risk zones within Kwara State are Jebba and surrounding communities in the Moro Local Government Area.
The government emphasized that the alert coincides with the peak of the rainy season — a period typically marked by heavy downpours, flash flooding, and related hazards. Authorities stressed that the early warning is a proactive measure aimed at encouraging preparedness and minimizing potential loss of lives and property.
Residents have been advised to avoid waterlogged roads and submerged areas during rainfall. The statement also called on communities to clear drainage systems and water channels around residential and public areas to prevent blockages and reduce the risk of flooding.
The Kwara State Government reiterated its commitment to working with emergency services and relevant agencies to ensure public safety during the rainy season.
