Members of the Lagos State Assembly have removed the Speaker, Mr. Mudashiru Obasa, accusing him of multiple statutory and financial infractions.
Chief Obasa was subsequently replaced by the Deputy Speaker, Mrs Mojisola Meranda while Mr. Fatai Mojeed became the new Deputy Speaker.
Mrs Meranda, who represents Apapa Constituency 1, was also a former chief whip of the House.
The erstwhile speaker was not at the plenary where he was removed.
The move comes a few days after a report detailing Obasa’s role in authorizing the withdrawal of N43.5 billion for the purchase of backup vehicles for lawmakers, among other controversial financial activities came into circulation.
Mr Obasa, 52, was first elected Speaker on June 8, 2015, and was the longest serving member of the Lagos State Assembly having been elected into the state legislature since 2003.
Also, the Clerk of the House, Mr Olalekan Onafeko has also been suspended.
