The Lagos State Government has unveiled a comprehensive initiative to promote agriculture, support rural development, and empower local communities through training, infrastructure, and welfare programs.
This was disclosed by the Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development, Mr. Bolaji Robert, during a ministerial press briefing marking Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second year in his second term.
According to Mr. Robert, more than 2,000 young people and women are currently undergoing training in aquaculture and digital skills, designed to provide participants with sustainable income-generating opportunities and improve productivity in rural economies.
“We are equipping young people and women across the state with the knowledge and tools to thrive in a modern agricultural economy,” he said. “Our goal is to create jobs, improve food security, and build resilient rural communities.”
In further efforts to boost food production, the commissioner revealed that 200 farms across Lagos have been provided with land, farming equipment, and essential inputs, enabling them to scale their operations and meet growing local demand.
On the rural development front, the ministry delivered 80 water and sanitation projects across underserved communities, aimed at improving public health and access to clean water.
In line with its mandate to preserve cultural institutions, the ministry also issued 61 letters of recognition to traditional rulers during the review period, reinforcing the role of traditional institutions in grassroots governance.
Additionally, the government disbursed over N775 million in insurance benefits to 271 beneficiaries—families of deceased employees of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and Local Government staff, demonstrating the administration’s commitment to staff welfare and social security.
The initiatives are part of Governor Sanwo-Olu’s broader strategy to deepen rural-urban integration, modernize agriculture, and expand economic opportunities at the grassroots level.
