A Lagos-based lawyer, Barrister Olayinka Sanni, along with a victim of police misconduct, Olawale Iyanda, and his father, have applauded the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex, Alagbon, Margaret Ochalla, for her swift intervention and humanitarian gesture in settling the victim’s medical bills.
The commendation follows a petition alleging extortion and human rights violations involving a police officer, Inspector Kalu, and a Point-of-Sale (POS) operator. Upon receiving the complaint, AIG Ochalla immediately ordered a thorough investigation by the Commissioner of Police, X-Squad, which led to the arrest of both suspects.
During interrogation, Inspector Kalu admitted that the complainant had been previously reported by residents for allegedly terrorizing the community. The complainant also confessed to involvement in identity theft and presented evidence of his actions. He was subsequently granted bail with instructions to return for further questioning.
The POS operator similarly confessed to handling ₦4 million in cash for the complainant, which was later returned in full through the directive of AIG Ochalla.
In a rare show of empathy, AIG Ochalla went beyond official duty by personally settling the victim’s medical bills, a move that drew praise from the family and their lawyer.
During a courtesy visit to her office, Barrister Sanni hailed the AIG as “a true reformist who leads with integrity and compassion,” urging other leaders to emulate her example in promoting justice and fairness.
AIG Ochalla reiterated the FCID Annex’s zero tolerance for corruption and misconduct, encouraging citizens to report any cases of unprofessional behavior through official channels. She assured that the Nigeria Police Force under her watch remains committed to accountability, transparency, and quality service delivery.
