The Lagos State Government has officially completed the relocation of the historic Okobaba plank market in Ebute Meta to a modern, purpose-built facility known as Timberville in Agbowa. As part of the resettlement initiative, 260 two-bedroom flats were provided to accommodate displaced traders.
The development was announced by Dr. Olajide Babatunde, Special Adviser to the Governor on e-GIS and Urban Development, during a ministerial press briefing in Alausa, Ikeja, held to mark the second year of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term.
Dr. Babatunde described the relocation as a key milestone in the state’s broader urban renewal strategy. “The Okobaba move is part of a strategic plan to revitalise major markets and uplift the urban landscape, while also improving the living and working environment for Lagosians,” he stated.
He disclosed that 21 other markets—including Computer Village, Abule Egba, Pelewura, Katangowa, and Jankara Gorodome—are currently being repositioned through relocation, revitalisation, or redevelopment, under the oversight of the Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency (LASURA).
In a broader push against urban slums, LASURA is targeting a 50% annual reduction in slum and squatter settlements across the state. This will be achieved through infrastructure upgrades, including improved drainage systems and road networks in underserved communities.
Highlighting progress in the built environment sector, Dr. Babatunde noted that 140 consultants have been certified as State Accreditors within the past year. These professionals screen architectural drawings, inspect construction stages, and monitor non-compliant structures through the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), aiming to curb incidents of building collapse.
He further revealed that 8,663 building infractions were identified during the reporting period, while 1,136 building authorisations were granted to developers for new construction projects.
Looking ahead, LASURA plans to commence the regeneration of the Ipodo slum using inclusive renewal approaches. The agency also intends to simplify the process for property applications and sustainable urban development.
In line with the state’s environmental goals, Dr. Babatunde announced a 30% rebate incentive for individuals and organisations who adopt Green Eco-housing construction, promoting climate-resilient and energy-efficient buildings across Lagos.
The announcement reflects the Sanwo-Olu administration’s continued push toward a modern, resilient, and inclusive Lagos through infrastructure renewal, sustainable housing, and regulated urban expansion.
