The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has officially launched the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones, in a bold move to strengthen traffic management, enhance security surveillance, and improve public safety across the state.
The initiative, aligned with the vision of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, marks a major transition from traditional traffic control methods to intelligence-driven digital operations. By harnessing aerial reconnaissance and high-definition monitoring, the drones will enable LASTMA to respond more swiftly and proactively to traffic incidents and emergencies.
Speaking during the unveiling, LASTMA General Manager Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki described the deployment as a “watershed moment” for Lagos. According to him, the technology represents more than new equipment as it signals a strategic shift that places Lagos at the forefront of modern traffic management and digital governance.
“These drones will provide real-time aerial oversight, enabling swifter interventions, better safety outcomes, stronger emergency coordination, and a more disciplined motoring culture,” he said.
Mr. Bakare-Oki assured residents that the drone operations would adhere strictly to privacy safeguards, ethical standards, and regulatory compliance, stressing that public trust and transparency remain central to the initiative.

Reaffirming the agency’s commitment, Bakare-Oki said the project reflects the THEMES+ Agenda of Governor Sanwo-Olu, where technology and innovation drive a safer, smarter, and more liveable Lagos.
He added that the innovation will not only reduce travel time and traffic mishaps but also save lives and property across the state.
