A major tragedy was averted in Lagos on Sunday after a fully loaded Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) tanker collided with a Lexus Jeep around Berger Suya, inward Mile 2. The swift intervention of operatives from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and other emergency agencies prevented what could have escalated into a catastrophic explosion.
Preliminary reports indicate that the Lexus Jeep, with registration number LSR 606 XH, was reportedly speeding when it rammed into the PMS-laden tanker. The impact caused the tanker driver to lose control, crashing into several unregistered vehicles displayed along the highway setback, leaving multiple cars damaged.
LASTMA officials attached to the area responded promptly, immediately cordoning off the site and diverting traffic to prevent secondary accidents. Their swift action created a safe perimeter for emergency responders to commence rescue and containment operations.
Officials of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, working with other agencies, flushed and neutralized the spilled fuel to prevent ignition, while firefighters oversaw the delicate transloading of the highly flammable PMS into another tanker. Their coordinated effort ensured public safety and prevented a potential inferno in the densely populated area.
Officers from the Trinity Police Division were also on the ground to provide security cover, maintain order, and ensure the safe completion of the operation.
According to eyewitness accounts, the driver of the Lexus Jeep sustained injuries and was handed over to the police by LASTMA officials for further investigation. The tanker driver, however, fled the scene immediately after the crash, prompting a manhunt by security operatives.
General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, commended the joint response teams for their professionalism and quick coordination, noting that their timely intervention prevented what could have been a devastating explosion.
“This incident highlights the efficiency and readiness of Lagos State’s emergency response system. The synergy between LASTMA, the Fire Service, and the Police once again demonstrates our collective commitment to safeguarding lives and property,” Bakare-Oki said.
He cautioned motorists against speeding and reckless driving, emphasizing that adherence to traffic regulations is essential to reducing avoidable road tragedies.
Mr. Bakare-Oki reaffirmed that under the 24-hour operational framework of LASTMA, the agency would continue to strengthen collaboration with security and emergency agencies to ensure rapid response to traffic-related emergencies across the state.
