LASTMA Rescues Four as Drunk Bus Driver Crashes Into Streetlight Pole in Alausa

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed the rescue of four injured passengers following a lone crash involving a commercial bus in the Alausa area of Ikeja over the weekend.

The accident, which occurred when a painted commercial bus (registration number KTU 69 YJ) veered off course and rammed into a streetlight pole, was attributed to the driver’s intoxication. Preliminary investigations revealed that the driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.

Four passengers—including a couple seated mid-bus, a male, and a female—sustained serious injuries. LASTMA officials at a nearby post responded swiftly, extricated the victims from the wreckage, provided emergency care, and handed them over to the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS). They were then taken to the Toll Gate Trauma and Emergency Centre for further treatment. Other passengers escaped with minor or no injuries.

Officers from the Alausa Division of the Nigeria Police were on the scene to secure the area and support rescue efforts.

Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki condemned the dangers of driving under the influence and reiterated the agency’s commitment to tackling such behavior through continuous monitoring and education campaigns. He noted that LASTMA’s Monitoring and Surveillance Unit remains active in motor parks across the state, reinforcing the message: “Don’t Drink and Drive.”

Bakare-Oki extended sympathy to the injured and wished them a full recovery.
