The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) today hosted senior officials from the Delta State Traffic Management Authority (DESTMA) on a strategic operational learning visit aimed at adopting proven traffic management solutions.
The delegation, received at LASTMA headquarters in Oshodi, was welcomed by the General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, who outlined the agency’s evolution since its establishment in 2000 under the administration of then-Governor Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He noted that LASTMA was created to bring order to the roads and reduce accidents through structured and professional traffic control.
Mr. Bakare-Oki emphasized the agency’s statutory strength, backed by the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018, and its robust workforce of over 4,000 personnel managing the unique demands of Lagos as a megacity.
A key highlight of the session was LASTMA’s adoption of technology, particularly the Traffic Management Solution (TMS) device, which enables real-time documentation of traffic violations. The device helps reduce friction between officials and motorists while enhancing transparency and accountability in enforcement.
Looking ahead, Bakare-Oki announced that the agency’s 25th anniversary will mark the launch of a 20-year Lagos State Traffic Management Plan (TMP), which is designed to align with the state’s infrastructural and economic development goals.
Responding on behalf of the Delta delegation, DESTMA Director of Operations, Engr. Edema Francis, expressed gratitude to LASTMA for the opportunity to observe and learn from its operational systems. He said the visit was focused on understanding LASTMA’s methods in offender data capture and analytics with a view to replicating similar models in Delta State.
The visit also includes tours of Lagos Traffic Radio and the State Command and Control Centre at Alausa, Ikeja—institutions instrumental to Lagos’s coordinated traffic oversight.
Also present were DESTMA Director of Technical Services, Engr. Atufe Patrick, and senior LASTMA officials led by General Manager Mr. Bakare-Oki.
