The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has issued a firm warning to residents, community leaders, religious organisations, and event planners to desist from blocking access roads during social, religious, and recreational activities as the festive season approaches.
The Agency expressed concern over the recurring practice in which celebrants, worship centres, street revellers, and event organisers take over major and inner-city road corridors, creating avoidable traffic congestion and exposing motorists to risks and unnecessary delays. LASTMA stressed that all public roads whether major arteries or local streets must remain free of obstruction and cannot be converted into temporary venues for private events or gatherings.
Owners of event centres, lounges, clubs, and similar recreational facilities, particularly in high-traffic areas such as Ikoyi, Victoria Island, Lekki, Shongotedo, and surrounding corridors, were also warned to provide proper parking arrangements for their guests. LASTMA noted that facilities whose guests routinely park on public roads will face strict enforcement actions, heavy penalties, or possible closure in line with existing traffic regulations.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, delivered the caution during an inspection tour of major traffic-prone corridors across the state. He reaffirmed the Agency’s commitment to ensuring smooth vehicular movement during the festive period, a time typically marked by increased travel and heightened social activities.
Bakare-Oki disclosed that LASTMA officers will intensify surveillance, boost operational presence, and implement proactive traffic-control strategies aimed at preventing obstructions, discouraging illegal parking, and minimizing road infractions. He urged residents and event organisers to secure necessary approvals, put in place proper logistics, and cooperate fully with LASTMA and other relevant agencies to ensure a safe and orderly season for all.
He further warned that the Agency will not hesitate to apply full legal sanctions against any individual or organisation found violating traffic laws or impeding the free movement of Lagos residents.
The General Manager also revealed that LASTMA has enhanced its operational capacity to ensure rapid response to emergencies and timely clearance of broken-down vehicles across the state. He reminded motorists that LASTMA’s toll-free hotline, 080000527862, remains available for immediate assistance.
