The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has issued a stern warning to transport unions and affiliated associations over the unauthorised use of so-called “Union Stickers” as substitutes for legitimate vehicle registration numbers.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the practice as a grave violation of regulatory frameworks and a major security threat to public safety in the state. He stressed that such actions undermine lawful vehicular identification systems and compromise effective enforcement.
Bakare-Oki reaffirmed that, in line with Lagos State’s security architecture, all vehicles must be properly registered and documented through authorised government agencies. He warned that attempts to evade statutory registration protocols through the deployment of illicit insignia would not be tolerated.
“Any vehicle discovered navigating the roadways under the guise of ‘Union Sticker’ identifiers or other unauthorised symbols shall be impounded, and those responsible will face full sanctions under the law,” the General Manager declared.
He further disclosed that LASTMA, in collaboration with security agencies and relevant enforcement bodies, will intensify surveillance across key traffic corridors to ensure strict compliance.
While appealing to transport unions to comply with lawful registration obligations, Bakare-Oki emphasised that adherence to proper procedures goes beyond administrative orderliness as it is a crucial safeguard for the collective security and wellbeing of Lagos residents.
He assured the motoring public that decisive enforcement actions will be sustained to protect lives, safeguard property, and strengthen traffic management across the state.
