Members of the House of Representatives have raised alarms over the escalating activities of Boko Haram and ISWAP in Nigeria’s northeastern region, urging the Federal Government to take immediate and decisive action to curb the growing threats. This call came after a motion of urgent public importance was presented by Ahmed Satomi, the representative for Jere Federal Constituency in Borno State. The motion highlighted the increasing attacks on military formations in Borno and Yobe States, which have resulted in the deaths of several military personnel.
Security challenges were the focal point of deliberations as the House resumed from a five-week recess, with discussions centered on the intensifying attacks on military bases, killings of innocent civilians in Benue State, and the rampant kidnapping and violence in Zamfara State. The lawmakers emphasized the need for a stronger, more coordinated security strategy across the country to tackle the rising threats from insurgent groups.
Yusuf Gagdi, the representative for Kanke-Pankshin-Kanam Federal Constituency of Plateau State, voiced concerns about the widespread fear among Nigerians due to the ongoing insecurity. He stressed that the persistent threats to citizens and security personnel alike demand urgent attention from the government.
Ahmadu Jaha, the member for Damboa, Gwoza, and Chibok Federal Constituency in Borno State, also contributed to the debate, warning that the security situation in the northeast is rapidly deteriorating and must be addressed with all seriousness to prevent further loss of life and destabilization.
In his opening remarks after the recess, Speaker of the House, Dr. Tajudeen Abbas, reiterated the Green Chamber’s commitment to supporting policies and initiatives that focus on resolving the country’s security issues. He expressed strong backing for any efforts aimed at tackling the increasing threat from insurgent groups and ensuring the safety of Nigerians across the country.
