The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has commenced a two-week on-the-job training (OJT) program for Air Traffic Safety Electronics Personnel (ATSEPS) across its Lagos, Abuja, and Kano stations.
The initiative, which began on May 16, 2025, is designed to enhance the technical capacity of personnel responsible for maintaining and installing key infrastructure that supports Nigeria’s communication, navigation, and surveillance (CNS) systems—vital components of safe air traffic operations.
According to a statement by Mr. Abdullahi Musa, NAMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, the training focuses on equipment and facilities managed by the Department of Communication, Navigation and Surveillance Power Systems. It aims to offer participants practical, hands-on exposure to critical technical processes and tools.
Participants will be mentored by seasoned supervisors and gain real-time experience in managing systems such as Automatic Mains Failure (AMF), Automatic Voltage Regulators (AVR), Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), solar power systems, electrical installations, cooling systems, and generating sets. Additionally, they will receive training in specialized areas including welding, air-conditioning compressor installation, and solar system maintenance.
The program also includes modules on preventive and corrective maintenance for infrastructure such as UPS units, inverters, AVRs, and generators—essential to ensuring uninterrupted power supply to critical aviation facilities.
Speaking on the importance of the program, NAMA Managing Director, Mr. Farouk Ahmed Umar, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to maintaining and improving the nation’s air navigation systems in accordance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs).
“This training underscores our dedication to strengthening the technical competence of our workforce to meet international standards,” he said. “Well-trained personnel are the bedrock of safe, reliable airspace operations.”
The initiative is expected to significantly boost the operational efficiency of NAMA’s CNS infrastructure and ensure uninterrupted, safe, and efficient air travel across Nigeria’s airspace.
With this effort, NAMA continues to demonstrate a proactive approach in enhancing the safety, reliability, and sustainability of Nigeria’s air navigation services.
