In a bid to ensure a strong outing at the upcoming National Sports Festival in Ogun State, the Nasarawa State Government has flagged off an early training camp for its athletes.
The camp, situated at the Special School in Lafia, was officially declared open by the State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Mr. Yakubu Kwanta, who charged the athletes to remain focused, disciplined, and committed throughout the training period.
Speaking during the inauguration, Mr. Kwanta stressed the importance of early preparation in achieving podium finishes. He noted that the state government has put in place adequate logistics and funding to support the athletes, boost morale, and enhance performance.
“This camp marks a significant step in our strategic preparation. We want to give our athletes the best chance at success, and that begins with early and focused training,” the commissioner said.
He also urged the athletes to view the opportunity as a call to duty, encouraging them to uphold excellence in both character and performance. According to him, the National Youth Festival and other competitions represent vital platforms for showcasing the state’s talent and justifying the government’s investment in youth development.
Team leaders Miss Beauty Timothy and Coach Bashir Bassi lauded the initiative, describing it as a historic first in the state’s sporting history. “This is the first time Nasarawa is taking such a proactive step in preparing for a major sporting event. The energy is high, and the commitment is real—we’re going for gold,” they said.
Nasarawa State athletes are set to compete in a variety of disciplines, including karate, athletics, and judo, among others.
The early start has ignited optimism among sports enthusiasts in the state, who hope to see Nasarawa make a mark on the national stage when the festival kicks off in Ogun State.
