NAWOJ, League of Women Voters Launch Campaign to Boost Women’s Participation in Politics and Governance

The League of Women Voters in Nigeria, in collaboration with the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), has launched a campaign in Kebbi State aimed at raising awareness on the importance of women’s participation in politics and governance.

Speaking at the launch, the Chairperson of NAWOJ, Kebbi State Chapter, Blessing Michael, emphasized that the campaign seeks to mobilize public support for the 74 Special Seats Bill currently before the National Assembly. The bill advocates for increased female representation in Nigeria’s National and State Houses of Assembly by allocating special seats for women.

Michael highlighted that passing the bill would promote gender equality, empower women in political leadership, and foster a more inclusive democratic process where women’s voices are adequately represented.

She also commended the support of the First Lady of Kebbi State, Hajiya Zainab Nasir Idris, and called on stakeholders—especially traditional and religious leaders, as well as women’s groups—to join the advocacy for this vital legislation.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the occasion and Kebbi State Commissioner for Information and Culture, Alhaji Yakubu Ahmed BK, noted that while promoting women in governance is commendable, appointments and elections should be based on merit. He expressed concern that some women currently in leadership positions have not met expectations.

Representing the First Lady, former Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Women Affairs, Hajiya Rafa’atu Garba Hamman, echoed the sentiment, stressing that only women of dignity and strong moral character should be supported for political roles. She urged that responsible and respected women in society be encouraged to take part in governance.

The event was well-attended by various women’s groups, civil society organizations, faith-based organizations, and labor unions. Presentations were delivered on women’s rights, political inclusion, and the crucial role women play in democratic governance.
