NBC to Amend Broadcasting Act to Reflect Digital Realities

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) is set to amend its governing Act to align with the rapidly evolving digital landscape, according to its Director-General, Dr. Charles Ebuebu.

Speaking at a press briefing in Lagos ahead of the upcoming AFRICAST 2025 conference, Dr. Ebuebu emphasized the urgent need to update existing broadcasting regulations in response to emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, which is increasingly being used to generate content. “While we have existing laws, there’s a clear need for our regulatory framework to evolve alongside technological advancement to ensure ethical standards and prevent infringements,” he said.

Dr. Ebuebu revealed that the proposed amendment would empower the NBC to more effectively oversee Nigeria’s broadcasting sector, ensuring that innovation does not outpace regulation. He also noted that AFRICAST 2025, with the theme “Navigating the Digital Surge to Build a Resilient African Media Ecosystem”, will serve as a vital platform for stakeholders to address current challenges and forge sustainable solutions.

Scheduled to take place in Lagos from October 20 to 24, AFRICAST 2025 is expected to shape the future of broadcasting on the continent, fostering innovation, inclusivity, and a level playing field for both established and emerging content creators.

To oversee the event’s execution, the NBC has appointed Mrs. Adesua Ayeneye, Vice President of Threesixty Africa Group, as the official Project Coordinator. In her remarks, Mrs. Ayeneye said the conference would serve as a rebranding opportunity for Nigeria and Africa, spotlighting the continent’s vibrant creative industries. “AFRICAST 2025 will not only elevate the visibility of our media sector but also provide a space for Africans to tell their own stories through compelling content and innovative products,” she said.

She added that insights from the event would be instrumental in shaping future media policies and strategies across the continent.

AFRICAST is a leading international broadcast conference and exhibition that brings together manufacturers of broadcasting and film equipment, offering them a platform to showcase their innovations and expand their footprint in the African market.
