NiDCOM Applauds Nigeria’s Historic Debut at Scripps National Spelling Bee

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has celebrated Nigeria’s first-ever appearance at the prestigious Scripps National Spelling Bee in the United States, marking a significant milestone in the country’s global educational footprint.

In a statement released by Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Director of Media, Public Relations, and Protocols at NiDCOM, the Commission praised 12-year-old Amazing-Grace Salami for her remarkable achievement. Salami, the winner of the inaugural Spelling Bee in Nigeria (SpIN), will represent the nation at the 100th edition of the renowned competition in Washington, D.C.

During a courtesy visit to the Commission, NiDCOM Chairman, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, described Amazing-Grace as a source of national pride, commending her poise and intellect. She highlighted the significance of Nigeria’s participation in the event, noting that alongside Ghana, Nigeria is now one of only two African countries to have ever competed in the century-old contest.

“This is not just a personal achievement for Amazing-Grace but a proud moment for Nigeria as a whole,” Dabiri-Erewa stated. “Her participation signals the strength of our youth and the promise they hold on the global stage.”

Amazing-Grace was accompanied by her mother, Mrs. Kemi Salami, and Mrs. Eugenia Tachie-Menson, Country Director of the Young Educators Foundation, the organization spearheading the Spelling Bee initiative in Nigeria.

NiDCOM reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives that empower Nigerian youth and expand the nation’s global presence through excellence, innovation, and educational development.
