In a significant stride toward academic excellence and institutional advancement, the Nigeria Police Academy (POLAC), Wudil, Kano State, on Tuesday, May 14, 2025, received a high-level delegation from the National Universities Commission (NUC) for a resource verification exercise. This marks a pivotal step in the Academy’s ongoing efforts to align its academic and infrastructural capacities with national university standards.
The verification exercise is a standard procedure by the NUC aimed at assessing whether universities and degree-awarding institutions possess the requisite human and material resources to run approved academic programs. The NUC team evaluated key areas including teaching facilities, staff qualifications, curriculum standards, library holdings, laboratories, and lecture halls.
The Commandant of the Nigeria Police Academy, Assistant Inspector General Patrick A. Atayero (MSc, MBA, PSC), personally received the verification team and led them on a guided tour of the Academy’s facilities. In his remarks, he expressed gratitude to the NUC for their consistent role in enhancing quality assurance across tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
“The Nigeria Police Academy is fully committed to producing officers who are not only professionally trained but also intellectually equipped to meet the complex challenges of modern policing,” said AIG Atayero. “This exercise helps us to benchmark our progress and identify areas where further investment and improvement are needed.”
Spokesman of the Academy, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Umar Musa Isah, emphasized that the verification was part of a broader institutional mission to consolidate the Academy’s status as a world-class police training and research institution.
“We view this verification as both a responsibility and an opportunity,” said DSP Isah. “It is an affirmation of our resolve to maintain high academic standards while developing competent, ethical, and service-driven police officers. The feedback from the NUC team will be instrumental in shaping future improvements.”
Established in 2012 as a degree-awarding institution, the Nigeria Police Academy has steadily grown in capacity, offering programs in law enforcement-related disciplines such as criminology, forensic science, sociology, psychology, political science, and computer science. It remains the flagship institution for grooming officers who will take up strategic roles in the Nigeria Police Force.
The outcome of the NUC verification will guide accreditation decisions and is expected to enhance public confidence in the quality of education offered at the Academy. The engagement reflects a shared commitment by both the Nigeria Police Force and the NUC to strengthen institutions that contribute to national security, peacebuilding, and justice administration.
