The Nigeria Police Force has condemned what it described as an unprovoked attack on operatives of its Intelligence Response Team (IRT) in Edo State, even as the Inspector-General of Police has ordered a thorough investigation into the death of a 14-year-old boy in Oyo State.
According to a statement released on Wednesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, May 20, 2025, at Okhuimwun Community in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State.
“The officers, who were in transit from Lagos, were attacked by a mob shortly after passing the University of Benin axis. They were assaulted with stones, sticks, and other dangerous objects, leading to serious injuries on two personnel,” Adejobi said.
He noted that despite the dangerous provocation, the operatives maintained restraint and did not return force, adding that the injured officers are receiving medical treatment and are in stable condition.
Adejobi warned against attacks on police officers performing lawful duties, emphasizing that such acts of lawlessness would be met with the full force of the law. “Investigations have commenced and appropriate legal action will be taken against those found culpable,” he said.
In a separate development, the Police Spokesman confirmed that the Inspector-General of Police has ordered a comprehensive investigation into a fatal traffic-related incident in Oyo State involving a police officer and officials of the Oyo State Traffic Management Authority (OYTMA).
The incident led to the death of 14-year-old Kehinde Alade, sparking widespread public concern.
“The officer involved in the shooting has been taken into custody, and the IGP has assured that the investigation will be transparent, with findings made public,” Adejobi stated.
He added that the IGP has extended his condolences to the bereaved family and reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to justice and accountability.
The Nigeria Police Force urges citizens to remain law-abiding and to always channel grievances through legal and peaceful means.
