The Nigeria Police Force has unveiled a community-driven framework to reinforce its Schools Protection Squad (SPS), aimed at improving safety in educational institutions across the country.
Commissioner of Police in charge of the SPS, Mr. Abayomi Shogunle, announced the initiative at the close of a two-day stakeholders’ forum and training held in Lafia, Nasarawa State. The event convened experts from academia, paramilitary bodies, and security agencies to train police personnel, local guards, and community stakeholders on swift response mechanisms to school-related threats.
CP Shogunle emphasized that the programme is a critical step toward operational efficiency and deeper community collaboration in safeguarding students. He urged traditional leaders, youth groups, and faith-based organizations to take active roles in sustaining the initiative.
“The success of the Schools Protection Squad depends on community ownership,” Shogunle stated. “We’re building a safer learning environment where every child can pursue education free from fear.”
Assistant Commissioner of Police Sanusi Jidda, Nasarawa State Coordinator for SPS, noted that officers are now better equipped to deliver on the programme’s mandate.
Dr. Benjamin Tough, a security expert and facilitator at the training, stressed the need for continuous community engagement and advocacy, describing the programme as a confidence-building intervention that empowers children through safety.
Participants also called for ongoing capacity-building efforts to address emerging security challenges affecting schools. The forum featured expert-led discussions and presentations under the theme: “Inter-Agency Collaboration for the Safety and Security of Schools in Nasarawa State.” Attendees included representatives from vigilante groups, hunters’ associations, the Directorate of State Services (DSS), and the military.
