The Nigerian Red Cross Society, in collaboration with the British Red Cross Disaster Management team, has commenced the second phase of its Food Security and Livelihood Support programme in Agboyi Community, Kosofe Local Government Area of Lagos State.
The new phase comes on the heels of a successful pilot in December 2024, which saw 180 households each receive ₦310,000 to boost their small-scale businesses, enhance self-reliance, and cushion the impact of recurrent flooding and the prevailing economic hardship.
In this phase, 270 households in Agboyi 1, 2, and 3 will benefit from direct business support. The process began with the training of 40 Red Cross volunteers, who have been deployed for beneficiary registration.
All selected households will undergo a compulsory two-day financial literacy training aimed at equipping them with essential skills for money management and sustainable business growth. After the training, beneficiaries will receive their grants via pre-loaded ATM cards.
The intervention is part of a five-year disaster management programme in Agboyi, where flooding has repeatedly threatened livelihoods. According to the Red Cross, the initiative is designed to address both urgent needs and long-term resilience, helping vulnerable households recover and thrive.
Founded to deliver emergency assistance, disaster relief, and humanitarian education, the Nigerian Red Cross continues to partner with local and international agencies to respond to crises across the country.
