Olowa Launches ₦400 Million Conditional Cash Transfer Scheme in Ibeju-Lekki

The Executive Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, Hon. Engr. Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, has flagged off a Conditional Cash Transfer Scheme valued at ₦400 million to support vulnerable households in the area.

The initiative, unveiled in Ibeju-Lekki on Tuesday, will run for 20 months and provide ₦100,000 each to 4,000 beneficiaries. Under the arrangement, 200 residents will receive a total of ₦20 million monthly, ensuring steady and phased disbursement of funds.

Speaking at the launch, Olowa, who also serves as Chairman of Conference 57, described the programme as the “Mother of All Conditional Cash Transfer Schemes.” He explained that it was designed to restore dignity and economic stability to widows, unemployed youths, and the elderly in Ibeju-Lekki.

“This intervention is about more than money. It is about hope, dignity, and giving our people a reason to believe in government again,” Olowa said.

The council chairman noted that the initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and forms part of the local government’s SHIEELD Agenda, which prioritizes social welfare, empowerment, and grassroots development.

Community leaders and youth representatives at the event commended the programme, saying it demonstrates the ability of local governments to translate national policies into tangible results at the grassroots level.

“This scheme shows that leadership is about service, not just occupying office,” said Ibraheem Ogunbanwo, a youth stakeholder and Treasurer of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Lagos State Chapter.

Observers believe the initiative could serve as a model for other councils across Lagos and beyond, particularly in addressing economic hardship through direct support. Analysts also note that conditional cash transfers, when properly managed, can reduce vulnerability and promote inclusive growth.

According to the council, disbursements will begin immediately, with monitoring mechanisms in place to ensure accountability and transparency in the process.

By rolling out the programme, Ibeju-Lekki Local Government has positioned itself as a trailblazer in grassroots governance, showcasing how targeted financial interventions can directly improve lives and strengthen community resilience.
