Tragedy struck in Ikorodu, Lagos, today Tuesday afternoon as a two-storey building under construction collapsed, leaving one person dead and nine others injured.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the fatality—an adult male—following hours of intense search and rescue efforts at Otta Ona Junction, near the Mobil filling station bus stop. The nine rescued, all adult males, were pulled from the rubble and treated on-site by LASEMA’s Pre-Hospital Care Unit.
LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said the agency received distress calls at 2:02 p.m. and activated emergency protocols immediately. Response teams from Agbowa and Alausa, including the specialized “Tiger” and “Lion” units, arrived at the scene by 2:40 p.m.
The cause of the collapse remains unknown, but an investigation is expected once rescue operations conclude. Heavy-duty equipment, including excavators, are aiding ongoing efforts to ensure no victims remain trapped.
The incident scene has been sealed off as emergency responders, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, LNSC, NSCDC, NPF, and LASBCA, continue their coordinated operation.
