The Kebbi State Police Command has announced the arrest of two suspects in connection with the theft of a motor vehicle in Shanga Local Government Area. The arrest, made on May 19, 2025, was carried out by a joint team of police officers and local vigilantes during a routine patrol.
According to a press statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Nafiu Abubakar, the operatives intercepted an unregistered ash-coloured Peugeot 206 along the Shanga–Dugu road. The vehicle, driven by two young men identified as Umar Yusuf (25) and Dalhatu Aminu (23), both of Birnin Kebbi, raised suspicion and was flagged for questioning.
Instead of complying, the suspects reportedly attempted to flee the scene, prompting a swift pursuit by the patrol team. They were eventually apprehended. During interrogation, the suspects confessed to having tricked the vehicle’s owner in Birnin Kebbi by pretending to be interested buyers. They requested to test-drive the car but absconded with it during the process.
Commending the swift response and professionalism of the patrol team, the Commissioner of Police, Kebbi State Command, CP Bello M. Sani, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to eradicating all forms of crime across the state. He also emphasized the importance of vigilance among officers on duty.
CP Sani further advised car dealers and vehicle sellers to exercise caution when dealing with prospective buyers, as some individuals may pose as customers while harboring criminal intentions.
The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Birnin Kebbi for deeper investigation. The police aim to uncover the full extent of the suspects’ operations and track down other accomplices for prosecution.
