Wives of officers of the Nigerian Army, Navy, Air Force, and Police have converged in Lagos for a joint empowerment and health awareness summit aimed at promoting wellbeing, emotional support, and collective strength among families of security personnel.
The event, convened by the founder of She Safety and Health Initiative, Ambassador Mabel Abel-Onaiwo, brought together members of the Defence and Police Officers Wives Associations (DEPOWA and POWA) to discuss mental health, safety awareness, and the role of women in sustaining stable homes while their spouses serve in demanding security roles.
Speaking at the opening session, Ambassador Abel-Onaiwo described the partnership as a commitment to building a legacy of strong and informed women who are not only beneficiaries of welfare programmes but contributors to national stability.
She emphasized that empowerment begins when women understand their importance and influence, adding that healthier and emotionally supported women create stronger families and resilient communities.
Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, who attended the summit, described the theme of mental health and emotional wellness as timely.
He noted that security personnel often experience stress and trauma arising from operational duties, and the stability provided by their spouses at home contributes significantly to their performance and general wellbeing.
The Commissioner also pledged continued support for the associations in sustaining programmes that enhance family unity among service personnel.
Chairperson of the Police Officers Wives Association in Lagos, Mrs. Risqot Jimoh, expressed appreciation for the collaboration, saying the initiative helps strengthen bonds across security families.
She encouraged members to be intentional about providing emotional balance, peace, and support for their spouses to enable them serve effectively.
The summit featured counselling sessions, interactive discussions, and health awareness activities, and is expected to be replicated in divisions and formations across the state.
